Change and the Unknown

I was talking to my sister about a life change she is making in the best possible way. After talking for an hour about how this path she was choosing was good for her, she said, “In the spirit of complete honesty, I have to tell you a part of me is still holding on.” She wanted to understand why, to dissect it, to check if this was a sign the path she chose wasn’t actually it.

But this is part of change and IS the reason change is so hard. We work up enough courage to open our eyes to what we are doing, who we want to be, and how to take the first step. We orient ourselves toward our new path with confidence and vitality. We take a few steps….and in comes weariness and a sense of dread.

This is part of change. It is a new way of being. It is as if we are changing our posture. We are so excited to realize a more upright posture will lead to a longer life, fuller breaths, happier days – we commit to doing it. We try it and it feels so good. Then after awhile, our muscles tire and revert back. Our willpower tires and makes us question if the new posture is actually healthier.

It is. That confidence at the beginning of change indicates this is correct. The self-doubt and questioning will come, discomfort will come…we look back and wonder if where we were was better. Because we don’t know how to deal with the unknown, but we certainly know how to protect ourselves and deal with the familiar.

Don’t lose heart. Within the unknown, there is so much freedom and joy. Go after it! Plunge into it! Go towards the pull of higher consciousness to your best self, your best life. This endeavor uplifts everyone. Do not fear – it is worth the plunge into freedom.
